Pinpu Black Pigs

Heavenly black pig pork from Taiwan

The history of “plains indigenous peoples” in Taiwan teaches us that genes merged with foreign genes lose their originality. Thus, we have worked tirelessly to reproduce the DNA of classic Taiwanese black pigs. To pay our respect to the land that made the aforementioned feat possible, we have decided to name our black pigs “Pinpu black pigs.”

In Taiwan, the genetic impurity of black pig has led to different black pig growth efficiency, widely different black pig pork appearances, and difficulty in controlling black pig pork quality. These problems prevent the pork from being introduced to the high-quality international pork market. To make sweet, delicious, sustainable Taiwanese black pig pork, we have worked tirelessly to rediscover the original DNA of Taiwan’s native black pigs.

In Taiwan, the genetic impurity of black pig has led to different black pig growth efficiency, widely different black pig pork appearances, and difficulty in controlling black pig pork quality. These problems prevent the pork from being introduced to the high-quality international pork market. DNA genetic sequencing

Tracing origin, purifying, and building a genetic database

We worked closely with National Taiwan University professor Wang Pei-hua, the Livestock Research Institute, and the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology to select the black pigs from which blood was to be drawn. The blood samples were then sent to a laboratory that used genetic sequencing to analyze the DNA of the pigs and carefully compare the DNA of different pigs. Pigs with highly similar DNA were kept for breeding. Next, we initiated the breeding, culling, seed stocking, origin tracing, and purification process. The process was repeated for more than a decade, allowing us to establish the Pinpu black pig DNA genetic database.

The pork is juicy, sweet, pleasing to the taste and has a high Omega 9 content.

Creating a local pig species with delicious healthy fat in Taiwan

Just like Spain has its black Iberian pigs and that Japan has its Kagoshima Berkshire, Taiwan has its “Pinpu black pigs.” Although the transition from working in the technology industry to working in the Taiwan black pig farming industry to breed and raise Taiwanese native black pigs is a lot of hard work, we were happy to successfully find the formula to creating “high-quality pork with healthy fat.” Our goal is to introduce Odiva and our Pinpu black pigs from Taiwan to the rest of the world so that everyone knows that Taiwan has Odiva and Pinpu black pigs!
